.....Buyong Hwang had 33-year career in the Korean graphic design community before he started his career as a full-time painter in 2009. His achievements are largely seven.
.....The first was appointed as a full-time lecturer at Myongji Junior College in 1977 at the young age of 26, and started teaching the first editorial design course in Korea. As a result, most publishers and magazines in Seoul at the time had graduates of Dept. of Graphic Design, Myungji Junior College.
.....Second, he published "Hwang Medium", a Korean font design study, published in 1978 by Publisher-Mijinsa. The book contains detailed ideas and methods for developing an original 1,300-character Hangul font design. This book caused a shocking response to the Korean visual design community at the time. This book later created an opportunity for Hangul design experts to be born in earnest.
.....Third, the "Literacy Campaign" was launched in 1979 with the publication of 12 volumes of Sigak-Munhwa-Moongo. At that time, there were few theoretical books in Korean in the visual design community in Korea. So not only college students studying the field, but also professionals in the industry after graduation, were thirsty for the acquisition of relevant knowledge.
.....Fourth, in 1981, he published a master's thesis titled "A Study on the Manual of Editorial Design of Periodic Publications." at the Graduate School of Seoul National University's Fine Art College. It was not only the first paper in Korea for editorial design, but also a unique and creative paper.
.....Fifth, he was scouted as the head of the design department of the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee in 1983 and succeeded in the Seoul Olympics as a catalyst for connecting the government and the community of design. In particular, the sports pictogram he designed at the time was evaluated as a masterpiece that could remain in the history of world pictogram design. From 1972 to 1984, silhouettes showing the characteristics and athleticism of each sport, which had remained unchanged for 16 years in four Olympics, transformed into a completely different appearance.
.....Sixth, Buyong Hwang's Peace Poster, which was announced in 1987, marked a milestone in the history of Korean poster design. Before that, there were some cases where Korean graphic designers submitted to prestigious international poster exhibitions and won selcted, but it was the first time that won an award. The event was hosted by the IAA, or the International Art Association, in Paris, France, and its name was the International Poster Salon. At that time, he won the second prize alone.
.....Seventh is a contribution made in 1995 when he became the first newspaper designer in Korea. At that time, Buyong Hwang was the only one in the country to apply for a newspaper design expert recruited by the JoongAng Ilbo through a massive advertisement. At that time, the newspaper design field was also unfamiliar to Korean graphic design talents. Buyong Hwang made a brilliant contribution to the reform of the Korean horizontal newspaper editing system by submitting 15 newspaper design research reports during the project. The result led to an increase in the circulation of the JoongAng Ilbo and an increase in advertising sales. In terms of circulation, it was from 1997 that "Chosun-DongA-JoongAng" changed to "Chosun-JoongAng-DongA"
